What is trauma?

Trauma is a mind and body response to deeply distressing, stressful or frightening experiences that threaten or cause physical or emotional harm to you or somebody else. This may be a one-off or a series of events.

A wide range of distressing experiences can lead to someone developing trauma, from natural disasters and accidents to violence and childhood abuse. An estimated 50-70% of people will have a traumatic experience at some point in their lifetime.

Trauma is a significant contributor to mental ill-health, and a risk factor for diagnoses such as anxiety, depression, PTSD and C-PTSD. After a traumatic experience, one in five will develop PTSD.

What are triggers?

Feelings motivate us to take some kind of action. Pleasant emotions, such as love and joy, promote connection, achievement, and enjoyment. However, unpleasant or distressing emotions, such as fear or anxiety, warn us of threat and tell us to take action to make ourselves safer - such as fighting, protecting, or escaping.

Fear usually indicates that there is an imminent threat to our safety. However, for many the fear response can be activated when there is no actual current threat. We can experience fear suddenly and it can be totally debilitating. In trauma, severe and debilitating fear can be triggered by feelings, thoughts, memories, people, or situations. The things or events that activate our fear response are what we refer to as triggers. They are many and varied, and personal to us and what we’ve experienced.

When living with trauma, triggers can appear out of the blue or happen regularly. They can have a huge impact on your daily life.

When triggered, it often feels like the traumatic event is happening all over again, leaving us feeling unsafe physically and/or emotionally. We need ways to quickly re-establish safety and bring ourselves back to the present moment. Grounding tools can help us do this.

Grounding Tools

Grounding tools are quick and handy, recognised exercises that you can use when triggered to help you manage traumatic memories and overwhelming or distressing emotions. They work by helping to calm your nervous system and bring your attention safely back to the present moment. Giving you confidence that you will be able to manage when you are triggered in the future. Confidence is not something we just have or don’t have - it is a habit that we can build. Starting a grounding tool or having them readily to hand before going into a situation that may be triggering can help you manage.

You may find that different grounding tools help in different situations. Tools can also work differently for different people, so if you've tried one that you don't find helpful - don’t despair! - there are plenty more you can try.

Practising grounding tools when you are calm will build up your skill and confidence ensuring they will help when you need them most.
